In the railway sector — wagons, bogies, locomotive bodies, rail infrastructure — weld quality is governed by the EN 15085 series of standards. This series is the railway-specific adaptation of ISO 3834-2 and has been mandatory across all EU member states since 2008.

The Five Parts of EN 15085

PartScope
EN 15085-1General scope and structure of the standard
EN 15085-2Manufacturer certification requirements (CL1–CL4)
EN 15085-3Design requirements (performance classes CP A, B, C, D)
EN 15085-4Manufacturing requirements
EN 15085-5Inspection and testing

Manufacturer Certification Levels (CL)

LevelScopeExample Components
CL1All safety categories (CP A, B, C, D)Bogie, axle, brake, drawbar
CL2CP B, C, DWagon body structure, door frame
CL3CP C, DInterior furniture, handrail, light bracket
CL4CP D onlyVisual/decorative components

Performance Classes (CP)

  • CP A: Highly safety-critical, dynamically loaded, risk of fatal injury
  • CP B: Medium-high criticality, dynamically loaded
  • CP C: Medium criticality, static or low dynamic load
  • CP D: Low safety criticality, decorative or support

EN 15085-2 Certification Process

  1. Apply to a recognised inspection body (TÜV SÜD, DB Systemtechnik, Lloyd's, Bureau Veritas)
  2. Initial audit: ISO 3834-2 + ISO 9001 + EN 15085 specific requirements
  3. Approved WPS library covering railway-specific materials
  4. Certified welders: EN ISO 9606 + EN 15085 supplementary module
  5. European Coordinator (ECWS): IWE/IWT level engineer
  6. Certificate validity: 3 years, interim audits every 12 months

European Coordinator (ECWS)

Every certified manufacturer must employ a European Welding Coordinator (ECWS) at IWE level. Responsibilities: WPS preparation, welder exams, production records, NDT reports, annual internal audit.

Practical reality: EN 15085 certification is a prerequisite for entering railway projects. TCDD, Eurostar, DB, SNCF and all major operators require CL1 or CL2 certification in tender specifications.
