CE marking is mandatory for welded manufacturing companies selling into the European market. CE is obtained against directives based on the product category. EN 1090 for structural steel and PED 2014/68/EU for pressure equipment are the main reference frameworks.
1. EN 1090 Scope
EN 1090 covers CE marking of structural steel and aluminum components. EN 1090-1 covers system/management requirements while EN 1090-2 details fabrication and quality control. EN 1090-2 defines four execution classes from EXC1 to EXC4.
2. PED Scope
PED 2014/68/EU is the directive covering pressure vessels, pipes and accessories. Items are classified into risk categories I–IV by maximum allowable pressure (PS), volume (V), fluid group and properties. Categories III and IV use modules such as G or H requiring a notified body.
3. Typical Manufacturer Path
| Step | EN 1090 | PED |
|---|---|---|
| System certification | EN 1090-1 FPC | Module H/H1 (quality system) |
| Welding QMS | EN ISO 3834-2 | EN ISO 3834-2 |
| Welding procedure | WPS/WPQR | WPS/WPQR |
| Personnel | EN ISO 9606-1 | EN ISO 9606-1 |
| Notified body | Manufacturer declaration + audit | Per module category |
