Defense welded manufacturing requires a discipline very different from ordinary structural steel work. Ballistic steels, high-carbon alloys with narrow preheat windows and the requirement for certified welding personnel define this domain. ArmaWeld delivers defense welding for armored vehicles and defense platforms from Konya. This article covers STANAG, MIL-STD standards and welding processes for special steels.
1. STANAG 4569 Ballistic Protection Levels
NATO standard STANAG 4569 defines protection levels of armored vehicles against ballistic and blast threats. Welding details must be designed in accordance with these levels.
| Level | Threat | Typical Thickness |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | 5.56×45 mm | 6–8 mm |
| Level 2 | 7.62×39 mm | 10–12 mm |
| Level 3 | 7.62×51 mm AP | 14–16 mm |
| Level 4 | 14.5×114 mm AP | 30–35 mm |
2. Welding Challenges of Ballistic Steels
Ballistic steels such as ARMOX, MARS, RAMOR and SECURE are tempered for high hardness, leaving very narrow heat input limits.
- Maximum heat input: typically 1.0–1.5 kJ/mm
- Preheat: 100–150°C depending on thickness
- Interpass temperature: max 200°C
- Filler: austenitic (e.g. AWS E307, E309LMo) preferred
- Hydrogen control: H5 or H4 class with controlled storage
3. Quality and Personnel Certification
For defense projects every welder must be qualified to the relevant WPS under EN ISO 9606-1 or customer-specific standards. ArmaWeld’s defense QC flow:
- WPS/PQR alignment with the customer
- Consumable batch checks (certificate, hydrogen level)
- Preheat and temperature logs
- 100% visual inspection plus sampled UT/MT for every weld
- Ballistic test panel verification
Important: Defense projects almost always require digital traceability records from consumable batch to finished product, both by the customer and the end user.
4. ArmaWeld Defense Track Record
ArmaWeld provides defense welding from Konya as an engineering partner to prime contractors and OEMs. Armored vehicle substructure parts, tactical wheeled platform chassis, ammunition boxes and special equipment are part of the production portfolio. Every project runs under EN ISO 3834-2 with welding engineer coordination and a digital traceability infrastructure.
